How can engage the public to transform HHS open data to help bridge disparities of health, including COVID-19 and Long COVID, Lyme disease, and infection-associated chronic illnesses?
Background
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) HealthData.gov fuels new business models, scientific advancements, and collaborative innovation by making government data open to the public, easily discoverable, and machine readable. HHS sought to engage the public with a call to transform open data into tools, resources, and products to improve health outcomes for all.
Ideation
In order to craft a challenge statement and determine focus areas, I completed expert interviews with HHS leadership. I coded these interviews and synthesized the data to determine priorities and create consensus around six topic areas:
Access to Care
Cancer Innovation
COVID-19 and Long COVID
Infection-Associated Chronic Illnesses
Kidney Diseases
Lyme Innovation
Content development and strategy
I led a diverse team of subject matter experts, crafting eight dynamic web pages through iterative development sessions. Working closely with software engineers, public health specialists, and data scientists, I designed and edited web content in adherence to agency style guides and content design best practices. Leveraging federal content guides and plain language standards, I ensured the accessibility and usability of online content, aligning with customer experience (CX) standards for a seamless user experience. My efforts resulted in inclusive and engaging web pages.
