Deep Field Scan
We researched youth organizations that facilitate future orientation and organizations that take action toward youth substance misuse prevention. From each of these organizations, we gathered insight into how our prototype should address future orientation and connect youth to resources. |
Expert Interviews and Observations
Talking with substance misuse experts throughout the city allowed us to gain a better understanding of where our design product could fit within the landscape of teen prevention and empowerment work in Boston. We held focus groups with youth to incorporate the perspective of our main users. |
Literature Review
We researched ways in which future orientation and goal-setting may serve as avenues to youth empowerment and engagement; further, we surveyed prior examples of media interventions that were effective at empowering youth, as well as strategies for co-designing with youth in order to inform our design process. |
During the creation phase we began to envision Future Connect, a mobile app with a series of goal-setting prompts that would connect users to resources related to their goals. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the development of our design was largely driven by creative brainstorming based on our literature review and expert interviews. The creation phase also involved creating frameworks (i.e. user personas, user scenarios, and journey maps) and prototyping paper and digital wireframes.

During the iteration phase we held a series of virtual focus groups with young people. We developed activities that mimicked those in the app prototype and showed youth the virtual creative prototype. We also created a survey to gather quantitative feedback.
